Chord sheet

Type or paste the lyrics, mark the chords in them, and move the whole song up or down a semitone at a time with the buttons. The Preview tab shows the sheet as you go, and Print lays it out on A4 pages to print or save as a PDF. Everything runs in your browser: the song is never sent to a server, only your own browser remembers it until your next visit.

Writing the chords

Write the chords on their own line above each line of lyrics, lined up over the right syllable with spaces, as on most guitar tab sites. A line counts as a chord line when it holds nothing but chords (and bar lines or repeat marks such as | or x2). If no lyrics follow it, as in an intro, it is shown as a line of chords on its own. Since the lining up is done with spaces, the text box shows the song in a fixed-width font.

An empty line starts a new verse. A line like [Chorus] or Chorus: becomes a section heading. If you know the ChordPro directives, those work too: {title: …}, {subtitle: …}, {key: …}, {capo: …}, {comment: …}, and a chorus between {soc} and {eoc} is marked with a vertical line on the sheet.

Chord names can use the usual qualities, such as m, maj7, 7, sus4, dim, aug, add9, 7b5 and 6/9, and a bass note like C/G, which is transposed as well.

H or B

The sheet always shows the chords in English notation: B, and Bb for B♭. When you type them in, German and Central European notation is understood too: an H chord is printed as B. If a song has an H chord, a plain B in that song is read the German way, as B♭, and printed as Bb.

The transposed chords are spelled to suit the key: transposed to F major it writes Bb, transposed to A major it writes C#. The key comes from the {key: …} directive, or from the first chord if there is none.

Capo

If you transpose a song down to play it with easier shapes, both the transpose controls and the header of the sheet show which fret to put the capo on so that it still sounds in the original key. Two semitones down, for example, means the 2nd fret. If the song already has a {capo: …}, that is taken into account too. The PDF file name then carries the capo as well: “Artist - Title - Capo 2”.

Printing

The Print button switches to the Preview tab and opens the browser’s print dialog, which shows the exact page layout, ready to print or save as a PDF. The sheet keeps the number of columns and the text size you set, and verses are never split across columns or pages. Three columns suit songs with short lines in the small text size; longer lines wrap at the column edge.

The print follows the site’s light or dark look: in dark mode it prints on a dark page, so switch to light before printing on paper. Saved as a PDF, the file is named “Artist - Title”, or “Artist - Title - Capo N” for a transposed song.
